#IncludeDesign — or why arts education is important
I recently discovered the #IncludeDesign campaign via Digital Arts magazine to raise awareness to the fact that the newly proposed Ebacc qualification will exclude Design and the Arts from the UK’s educational roster as part of the broad changes proposed by the current Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove. This, of course, is an incredibly myopic and possibly detrimental proposition for the creative industries in the UK. I will confess that as a foreigner living here for over a decade I still have to figure out how the UK educational system works precisely, but I do know that having a creative module as part of your high school education is an important one to have —
it kept me sane throughout high school before I embarked for college to study design proper.
As you can see from the #IncludeDesign site, many creative agencies and designers are backing the campaign to see this overturned and I didn’t hesitate one moment to add my name to the list and sign the petition. I came to the UK in the summer of 2000 precisely because we have a vibrant and rich design culture here and an appreciation of the craft and industry of design in all its facets. That creative education is at risk is whilst David Cameron is showboating his preposterous Silicon Roundabout idea at home and abroad boggles the mind. Where do they think the people that make all this stuff come from?
So before you break off for the holidays, You can support the campaign by signing the petition, and spread the word to urge that this proposal gets laid to rest.
